Office 365 es una nueva propuesta de Microsoft en cuanto a productividad basada en la nube (aplicaciones basadas en internet). Para esto viene fusionando Office Web Apps con Business Online Productivity (BOP) e integrando Exchange, Sharepoint y Lync (ex Office Communicator). Este nuevo servicio recibe el nombre de Office 365, que se supone será una suite de ofimática orientada a la colaboración y trabajo en equipo para empresas pequeñas y medianas basada en Internet.
En realidad se trata de unificar la oferta de toda su gama de productos de colaboración y productividad on-line para empresas y en definitiva un agresivo intento por dejar fuera de juego a otras empresas que ofrecen soluciones similares como Google con Google Docs.
Este servicio está disponible a partir del 2011, junto con el servicio CRM (Customer relationship management) para la gestión de las relaciones con los clientes. También desde el 2011 está en marcha la oferta del servicio a instituciones educativas.
El servicio de Office 365, permite a los usuarios (además de trabajar con su aplicación de oficina) acceder a herramientas de productividad, colaboración, comunicación por correo, mensajería instantánea, acceso a través de móviles, tablets y navegadores web, compartir documentos, servicio de teleconferencias y otros.
El servicio de Office 365 no es gratuito, sin embargo los bajos costos de implementación y mantenimiento lo hacen ideal para empresas nacientes y que requieren alta productividad de Ofimática.
